All club members who are native English speakers have a unique opportunity for a hands-on volunteer experience sharing information for 40 minutes on a topic of their choice to a class of 7th/8th graders (13-14 years old). Suggestions of topics are stereotypes, youth culture, family life, religion, something from your home country and native culture. I had the opportunity to participate in their first International English Day last year and found it to be a fun and rewarding experience. The students in my class were from all over the world, had no problem understanding English, and were very appreciative. Representatives from private businesses and consulates also participated.

A little information about this gymnasium: Werner-von-Siemens-Gymnasium (WSG) is located in eastern Munich/Neuperlach and serves a large proportion of pupils with an immigrant background (approximately 50 percent). Integration and prevention programs promote the intercultural competence of all students.  Because of their commitment to the integration of their students to a common productive life and learning, the school was awarded the special prize “Munich Lichtblicke 2010”.

If you are interested in this International English Day or have any questions, please let me know by 20 Jan., Liz Janson, lizbjanson@gmail.com. The school can take up to ten volunteers from our club.
