May 2017 Chair’s Letter

A monthly email for members with news about the club

Dear Members:

Julie Leonard, our speaker at the May General Meeting, had a lot to say about surviving and thriving the cultural shock of moving. You can find the core of her presentation by clicking here. Julie’s main point was, “get involved, find your people, move in the world.” She emphasized the need to find reasons to connect with other women and men and highlighted how the websites Internations and Meetup can help make that happen, especially for a younger generation used to using the internet for shopping, transportation, and information. Julie’s presentation was precise and to the point. It was great to have her come and clarify what we already knew because we’re already doing it here in the Munich International Women’s Club. For over 25 years, we’ve been creating a community for women from all over the world who are here for just a few months, a few years, or a lifetime.

MIWC Monthly Meeting on January 11, 2017

MIWC is delighted to welcome Tara McCartney as our first speaker of 2017.

Women in rural India face a multitude of issues which stand in the way of equality: a fiercely patriarchal society, high rates of sexual and domestic abuse, limited access to nutrition and preventive health measures, skewed gender population ratios, a manipulative dowry system and much more. While women’s empowerment projects are growing in the developing world including India, there is still a dearth of best practices and a comprehensive understanding of how to transform the status quo.

Tara McCartney is the Founder of the NGO, United for Hope, working in one of India’s most underdeveloped districts. In this talk she examines the daily reality of gender disparity in rural Northern India and looks at some of the approaches for understanding and improving the impact of women’s empowerment projects in these areas including the integration of men and a new paradigm of early education.

October Speaker – Frauen helfen Frauen e.V. München

The MIWC takes great pride in supporting the lives of women in our community.  One of the wonderful ways that has been accomplished is through the support and funding of the domestic abuse shelter Frauenhaus Frauen helfen Frauen e.V. München.  This October the MIWC is pleased to welcome as our guest speaker, the Frauenhaus administrator.  She has devoted over 25 years of her life at the shelter and has witnessed the struggles and challenges of those living through such devastating circumstances.  She will share how your contributions have improved the lives of the women and children living at Frauenhaus, creating a safer environment upon which to build a more successful future.

Due to the nature of her work and potential security issues we will not divulge the name of our speaker.
